The Reason Seniors Need to Know Oklahoma Medicaid Guidelines

January 19, 2017 by Larry Parman, Attorney at Law

It is important for everyone to know Oklahoma Medicaid guidelines because Medicaid is an insurer that provides for care you might otherwise be unable to afford. Medicaid is an insurance program operated as part of a federal / state partnership. It is for people who qualify based on limited incomes.  The Medicaid program cannot turn down anyone due to their medical status if they are otherwise eligible for benefits. It provides coverage for care that Medicare and private insurers do not pay for and can literally be a life-saver.

Parman & Easterday can help you understand Oklahoma Medicaid guidelines and assist you in making sure you can meet the requirements for eligibility if care is needed. Give us a call to find out about the Medicaid rules and to discover why eligibility matters so much.

It is especially essential for seniors to know about Medicaid eligibility rules, as the chances that a senior is going to need Medicaid are greater due to the increased possibility of serious and permanent illness.  It is estimated that 70% of seniors will require long-term care before they pass away.

What are Oklahoma Medicaid Guidelines?

Oklahoma Medicaid is actually called SoonerCare. The Oklahoma HealthCare Authority explains that there are different Medicaid or SoonerCare programs depending upon the circumstances of the person who needs benefits. The rules are different for children, for pregnant women, and for seniors over the age of 65.

In general, the Oklahoma Medicaid guidelines require you to be a state resident and meet citizenship requirements. You must have limited income based on your family size, and must have few countable resources or assets. This includes things like money in bank and investment accounts and even valuable personal property.

If you earn too much money or have too many assets, you will not be able to get Medicaid under the Oklahoma Medicaid guidelines. However, you can spend down assets to qualify, or possibly even qualify if your medical care needs are very high and you are spending a lot of your income on care. Many people may create a Medicaid plan so they can protect assets while qualifying for coverage under Oklahoma Medicaid guidelines.

Why Is It So Important For Seniors To Know Oklahoma Medicaid Guidelines?

While everyone should know how and when Medicaid protects them, it is especially important for seniors to understand rules for Medicaid coverage. Seniors, because of advanced age, are statistically more likely to develop long-term or serious medical conditions which are very expensive to treat. While Medicare provides limited coverage, there are copays and co-insurance costs associated with using Medicare services and not every senior can afford to pay this portion of care.

Medicare does not cover all the kinds of care that many seniors end up needing. Medicare will not cover nursing home care except for care that is of short duration and for skilled medical services. Most private insurers have the same limitations. For seniors who need custodial, or routine, care in a nursing home, Medicaid and private paying are the only available choices. Private pay is a bad choice because you could end up spending thousands of dollars monthly and wasting your whole life savings very quickly.

If you are able to qualify for Medicaid and you availed yourself of the assistance of an Oklahoma Medicaid planning lawyer, you spare yourself and your family the potential loss of your life savings on nursing home care or other costly medical expenditures. Call an experienced attorney to find out how to make sure you can get Medicaid, even if you think you have too many assets or think your income is too high to get covered.
